Nobody else can be you,
but you.
And you can’t be anybody else, either.
There is a lot of pressure on young people
to “be like” sports figures or models.
And all that targeted advertising is designed
to zero into people’s dissatisfaction with themselves.
And some ads even take it a step further:
“If you aren’t dissatisfied with yourself,
you should be.”
“Look at how better your life could be
if you wore this,
or ate that,
or drove this trendy vehicle.”
Trouble is, you will never be a good someone else.
But you could be a great you.
None of these big names who endorse all these products
could ever be successful being you,
no matter what they wore or drove.
So ask yourself next time you see an attractive commercial:
“Will this product really make a significant impact on my real self,
or will it just package me differently
so I can fool the people around me?”
And ask yourself as well, “Does this famous person endorsing this product
really care about me?”
Finally, check out your friends.
If they really like you
and enjoy you whenever you show them your real self,
then they really are your friends.
If they won’t be with you
unless you give up being yourself,
then they’re not your friends.
No matter what they say, they’ll never care about the real you.
And no matter how hard you try, you’ll never be happy being like them.
