What if it were allowed for all of us to do
whatever we wanted to do,
anytime,
anywhere.
No laws.
No limits.
Some people dream for these moments.
Others are acting out this dream right now.
Only they don’t understand why other people object.
And their dream can turn into a nightmare.
Let’s play this out a bit.
You want to dump all of society’s rules,
and drive 80 miles an hour through a school zone.
In the process, you kill three children,
who were also thinking
they could do whatever they wanted to do,
and today that meant crossing the street safely.
In this scenario, what you chose to do ended their lives,
and certainly kept them from doing what they wanted to do.
The reality is that we can’t always do anything we want to do,
because it will soon collide with what other people want to do.
Eventually this free-for-all would wipe out most of our society as we know it.
The decisions we make
won’t be limited just to consequences to ourselves,
no matter how we twist our minds to believe that.
Others receive consequences from our decisions too.
And if you want these other people to consider you
when they’re making their choices,
then, fair is fair,
you have to anticipate all of the consequences of your choices
to yourself
and to the people around you.
That’s the unspoken agreement that makes our society civilized.
When people ignore this,
people are hurt,
and our society becomes a lot less civilized.
Decisions aren’t just about freedom.
They’re also about consequences.
That’s why we make decisions,
so we can produce consequences.
If you really want build a more caring world right around us,
remember,
it starts with you and me,
and our decisions to take care of each of us.
If you really don’t want to do that,
then watch out the next time you’re in a crosswalk.
You might be dodging someone just like you.
